How could I authenicate a horse shoe I have that may have been worn by Citation in the 1948 Kentucky Derby.?

I buy storage units at auctions and found this horse shoe mounted and framed with a metal plate stating. Horse shoe worn by Triple Crown Winner Citation in the 1948 Kentucky Derby. Do not know if it is authentic or not just wondering what steps I need to do to find out.
