How do you pronounce some Russian letters?

I'm having a ***** of a time pronouncing some of these letters, for instance they say pronounce Д as D, except touch your tongue to your lower teeth. When I say it comes out sounding like I'm drunk, it comes out as a vowel, not a consonant. At any rate it sounds nothing like D. Am I doing something wrong?
